Had my truck towed in last week for a bad misfire and P0301, it’s intermittent . They saw the oil should be changed and I need to do that to finish diagnostics. Paid $50 for an oil change. It didn’t happen again while it was there, paid $120 for a diagnostics. After taxes, $182. Warranty covered: $0.
Guess what? Still happening. Took it back last night. They think it’s a lifter. They don’t want to touch it. I have to get it to a Dodge dealer 3 miles away, both of these dealers are 15 miles from home with shit I-95 traffic. I’ll also have to fork over the deductible and now a second dealer’s diagnostic charge.
Not a happy camper.
Summary so far :
$2050 paid
$700 on 3/16,
$420 on 6/17, $220 not covered.
$0 on 11/18, $182 not covered.

That's bunk. Why are you paying a diagnostic fee? They won't diagnose for free? At that point I'd just say screw it and go to the Dodge dealer from now on even though traffic sucks.

I saw that too, and I was like “That can’t be it, would Carmax offer a warranty on a rusty truck?”

there’s no free diagnosis. Granted since they didn’t actually diagnose it he shouldnt have been charged

2006 Ram 1500 purchased in 2015.
No, that rust wasn’t there in 2015.

They claimed “The needing an oil change was the cause and it’s a maintenance issue. Which isn’t covered.”

That seems fishy that they “had” to do an oil change in order to do a diagnostic. If that were true it should have been included in the diagnostic fee.

Yeah, hence me not being happy with effectively having a $182 oil change right now.

That’s horseshit. I'd call them out on it. And I'm not usually one to jump all over a shop when I don't know their side of it. But that's straight horseshit.

Yep. I miss my Dakota more and more. Just wish they existed without rust here. Hopefully things will work out and I can get something in Portland in a few years.

The bitch of it is also that the Dodge dealer is probably going to pull the head to actually fix the issue, which will contaminate the oil with antifreeze and they’ll have to change it again.

Absolutely. You don’t change oil before diagnosis for that reason. Unless the oil is so bad it’s basically just solid sludge. But at that point you have much bigger issues than a single cylinder misfire. “Needing an oil change” absolutely will not ever cause a single cylinder misfire and anyone who thinks it can doesn’t understand how engines work or what’s needed for proper combustion.

Actually how the conversation went down:
“The $120 diagnostic fee that I paid, can I get that back?”
“You brought it in for a low oil condition that could feel like a misfire.”
“No, I brought it in for code P0301 and a bad misfire which returned the first time I drove it.”
(Note: it still had 60psi of oil pressure, NOT starved in anyway)
“But we fixed the low oil condition.”
“I brought it in for a misfire. You did not fix that.”
“Yes, that is why we are waiving the $83 diagnostic this time.”
“But you did not fix the problem.”
“I don’t understand.”
“You did not fix why I had it towed in the first time.”
“We changed the oil and it didn’t happen on our test drives.”
“But it happened three times in four days since.”
“But we fixed the low oil condition."

How much does it cost to fix a low oil condition? $ 5-10? So either way, they're still screwing you and doing a shit job of hiding it.

I filled out their survey. Once I get it back from the Dodge dealer I’m going over their heads with what the Dodge dealer said.
